Wigan 3-0 SBAFC
Many thanks to everyone that came along to the middle of nowhere on Saturday morning. As my car pulled up to the "venue" Mick said "it's going to be windy out there." He was right. Very right.
Eventually the Wigan lads turned up, and the council had changed the locks on the changing room, so we all got changed outside. "No showers afterwards? No problem."
Ali gave us a rousing team talk and we lined up like this: 4-4-2
Dons in Goal
Mark Woodfield at Right Back, Tim and Jonny at centre back, John McCutch at left back.
Mick and Lanie in the centre of midfield, Jordan on the right wing, Sam on the left wing and Joe McKeown and New Dan up front.
Finnbarr, James and Mark the Chef were on the bench.
We were shooting with the wind in the first half and Wigan couldn't get the ball out of their own half. Lanie had a blasting free kick that went just over the bar and then John went one on one with their keeper and put it wide. We had a number of corners that we failed to get in on. Wigan had a couple of attacks and nearly scored, but for a heroic block from Tim.
Half time 0-0. Ali threw boots and cups of tea around the changing room in a bid to motivate us for what was going to be a tough second half. Well, I'm sure he would of, if we had the key to the room!
A couple of changes, Mark the Chef on at left back, James on at right wing. We were coping well until the 63rd minute when Wigan scored after a bit of a scramble in the box. They made it 2-0 after 75 mins when a shot caught the wind and lofted over Dons. All he could do was say Oh Sh..! They scored a 3rd with 5 minutes to go. We played well in the 2nd half, and kept going until the end and had a couple of half chances.
All in all, it wasn't really a game of football with it being the worst conditions we've played in for a while, The wind made it difficult to breath, so playing football was always going to be a challenge. And we had FOUR new players and a new manager. I think we can be proud of our days work.
Most importantly we've made some new friends in Wigan. The game was played in an excellent spirit and they are a decent bunch of lads. Their w***y egg-chasing council won't let them book a pitch in Wigan, that's why we had to play in the middle of nowhere, and I feel sorry for their situation.
We did well out there. Bring on Land Ut Gods!
Shooter - New centre-back Jonny Haskins, solid display and a few useful runs up front.
Rooter - Mark The Chef: "Right lads, keep the ball on the floor in this 2nd half" Marks first clearance: balloons in the air, goes about 10ft forward and then 20 ft backwards and out for a corner!
All the best,
Tim
home!
