Vegeta was the Prince of all Saiyans on Planet Vegeta. He was taken from his father, King Vegeta, when he was young because Frieza knew he'd be strong, and maybe a threat too, when he was older. With his companians Nappa and Raditz (Two other Saiyans), he goes around the universe destroying and defeating planets at Frieza's bidding.
Later, after hearing a radio call from Raditz, he rushes to Planet Earth to find the Dragonballs with the goal of eternal life. This trip takes him one year. Reaching Earth, his counterpart Nappa battles with the Z-Fighters, but is battered by Goku, but Vegeta destroys him because he is too weak. Goku almost kills Vegeta, but mercilessly lets him go.
During his stay on Earth, he discovers that Planet Namek has the Dragonballs too so after he is healed, he journeys there, but finds Frieza collecteing the Dragonballs too. He now betrays Frieza and teams up with Gohan and Krillin because he realizes he is too weak to fight Frieza alone. He then teams up with Goku and Piccolo upon thier arrival.
Throughout the rest of Dragonball-Z Vegeta struggles to surpass Goku, a third-class Saiyan who is stronger than him.
During the Cell Saga, he now is friends with the Z-Fighters, though he says he isn't. Deep down he cares for his son Trunks and is friends with the Z-Fighters , but enjoys compitition and is overwhelmed by his pride and is cocky.
