The Best Films Ever Made

In no particular order.

Star Wars directed by George Lucas

One of the most important events in cinematic history. Special effects of a kind never before seen, real characters and a superb story made the film a success beyond even Lucas' wildest dreams.

The Empire Strikes Back directed by Irving Kershner

The sequel is at least as good as the original. Darkness and despair all round replace the hope of the Episode IV.

The Russia House directed by Fred Schepisi

Australian director Schepisi did justice to Tom Stoppard's adaptation, and in turn to le Carré's wonderful spy novel of the same name. Connery and Pfeiffer on top form are joined by James Fox, Ken Russell and others.

The Sheltering Sky directed by Bernardo Bertolucci

Bertolucci's cinematography is the icing on the cake for this adaptation of Bowles' classic novel. Bowles himself makes a short appearance as narrator, and John Malkovich and Debra Winger are marvellous.

The Player directed by Robert Altman

An ingenious commentary on the workings of Hollywood. Altman's direction is matched only by Tim Robbins' performance as the troubled movie producer.

Broadway Danny Rose directed by Woody Allen

This is the great film that Allen claims he has never made. A triumphant comedy starring Allen and Farrow (in an unusual rôle).

Crimes and Misdemeanours directed by Woody Allen

A funny and illuminating look at the way people go through life, the choices they make and the crimes, large and small, that they commit. With great performances from Allen, Farrow, Alan Alda and Martin Landau (yes, the one in Space 1999!).
