Medicine Women (MUSA)
  • established 1986
  • constant fight with government to develop
  • many diseases in community, so made a medicinal project
  • encouraging people to use natural remedies
  • started with 19 women - only 12 left because of problems with husbands
  • not a community project - family run, but they help the community
  • ecotourism gave them courage to continue
  • started drying and selling herbs
  • used to have better business because of main road
  • working to get government to give permit for a shop
  • Ecoteach has $ to pay lawyer
  • didn't have $ before, but with permit have to change name to Las Musas
  • with permit, can raise more $
  • courses where they train communities
  • women do it for love, not $ - volunteers
  • last flood ruined some plants and equipment
