This 6x6 design dates from 1981 and was intended to be built in two versions, one with a 200 bhp engine and armed with a 90 mm turret. The second was to be powered by 320 hp engine and armed with a 105 mm FL-12 turret, similar to that fitted to the AMX 13 light tank and Panhard EBR. The design compares well to contempoary vehicles, such as the AMX-10C, VBC 90 or the Sagaie and was far more modern than the EBR, although, whether the retention of so much glass, on the frontal arc, of a front line combat vehicle, was possible, is open to debate.. It is not known if either of the 6x6 ARVs were ever built, however, it appears, that it would have been a good buy, for the Irish Army, during a high risk period, and would also have given a capability still not available today. A side benefit for the country would have been the much needed boost in employment, approx. 40/50 highly skilled jobs, at a time when jobs were few and far between. |
