The 14th or 'current' Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso is believed by millions to be the 74th manifestation of Avalokitesvara, the enlightened Buddha of Compassion, or Kuan Yin.
The title of Dalai Lama means 'ocean of wisdom'.  He is the head of state and spiritual leader of the Tibetan people.
Tenzin Gyatso was born July 6th, 1935.  In 1959 he was foced to flee his homeland of Tibetafter the invasion of the Chinese Army.  The Dalai Lama fled to India and has lived there ever since.
Since his first visit to the west in the early 1970's his reputation as a scholar and a man of peace has grown so that he is known world wide.  He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and has imparted a message of universal responsibility for love, compassion and kindness.
