Coursework Requirement
Students are normally required to fulfil the following coursework requirements within their period of candidature:

MPhil students: 7 credit units (minimum requirement)
PhD students: 14 credit units (normal requirement)

Research students in the Faculty of Business are required to take a stipulated set of taught courses.

Credit Transfer and Coursework Exemption
Coursework exemption or credit transfer should be limited to a maximum of 3 credit units for MPhil and 7 for PhD.

Students who have been granted coursework exemption or credit transfer should fulfil the remaining coursework requirements by taking taught / seminar courses, and not independent study or reading courses.

Credit transfer will only be considered for credits gained from courses at postgraduate level that are relevant to the students' research studies.

Exemption from coursework requirements will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.

Course Registration and Class Attendance
The Qualifying Panel should prescribe coursework for students normally within one month from the start of their studies. A list of
approved courses for research students and course syllabuses are available on the SGS Web site. The Qualifying Panel should notify SGS of any subsequent changes to the coursework prescription.

SGS will notify students of the coursework requirements as prescribed by the Qualifying Panels, once they are available. Students can consult their class schedule through the Web around two weeks before the relevant semester starts by following the procedures given below:

Students should check if there are any clashes between the timetable of their classes and that of their departmental duties or other activities. Those who wish to add/drop courses should submit an SGS16B Form to SGS. Late requests exceeding the add/drop deadline (normally the first day of the second week of the semester or term after the start of a semester/term) will not normally be allowed.

For general information on assessment and examinations, please select "Campus Pipeline" from the CityU homepage, then click on "My Courses", select "Other Academic Information (Student)", and then click on "Examinations". For class attendance and examination arrangements during typhoons or rainstorms, please visit the Web page on "Adverse Weather Arrangement".

Students can view their own personal examination timetable and assigned seat number normally one month before the examination period through the Web by following the procedures given below:

Announcement of coursework results is made through the Web, normally within one month after the examination period. Students can view their coursework results by following the procedures given below:

Students who wish to have a course grade reviewed can submit a request to the School of Graduate Studies within 10 calendar days of the publication of the Assessment Panel's decision. A fee of HK$200 per course is charged, and the fee will be refunded if the appeal is substantiated.

Appeal
Students may make an appeal in writing to SGS on matters relating to their studies.

An appeal against the examination results should be made in writing to the Board of Graduate Studies through SGS within 10 working days of the notification of the results. The appeal will be considered only if there has been a material administrative error, or some other material irregularity. The decision of the Board of Graduate Studies will be final.

Coursework Requirement

(a) Students are normally required to fulfil the following coursework requirements within their period of candidature:

MPhil students: 7 credit units (minimum requirement)
PhD students: 14 credit units (normal requirement)


Research students in the Faculty of Business are required to take a stipulated set of taught courses.

(b) To fulfil the coursework requirements, MPhil students should not take more than one independent study or reading course and PhD students should not take more than two such courses throughout their period of candidature.  Students may be exempted from the above if they have fulfilled the following minimum requirement:

MPhil students: 5 credit units of taught/seminar courses
PhD students: 10 credit units of taught/seminar courses

(c) At least half the coursework (4 credit units for MPhil and 7 for PhD) should be taken at CityU or other local institutions.

(d) Courses prescribed for research students should be predominantly at postgraduate level (i.e. P5 courses or above).

General Information
The Cross-Institutional Course Enrolment Scheme will be introduced by the following seven local institutions in September 2003 to allow their research students to enrol in courses offered by the participating institutions:

City University of Hong Kong
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Hong Kong Baptist University
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Lingnan University
The University of Hong Kong

Please note the following:

Students can only take courses from other institutions that are relevant to their research areas.
Students enrolling in a course under this Scheme are required to participate fully in the course, which includes completion of coursework and examinations, if applicable
All the credits gained can be counted as fulfilling the Universityˇ¦s coursework requirements for research degree studies unless otherwise specified by the department or school

Application Procedures
The School of Graduate Studies will normally announce application arrangements via email for cross-institutional course enrolment one to two months before the start of a semester/term at the respective institutions.

Students should complete the course enrolment form of the relevant institution and send the completed form to the School of Graduate Studies by the application deadline of the course concerned. Please note that:

Students can only take courses from other institutions that are relevant to their research areas.
Late applications will not be entertained.
The School of Graduate Studies will send your application to your supervisor and Department Head for endorsement before forwarding it to the relevant institution for consideration.
The relevant institution will inform you of the application decision directly.
