Sargodha

Sarghoda is a colony town, established in 1903, but its origins are older Sargodha is a combination of the words "Sar" meaning a pond and "Godha" said to be the name of a Hindu Fakir who lived there long ago. The agricultural prosperity has washed away the memories of both. Today it is an agriculturally rich area with a textile mill and a sugar mill and an Air Force base.

Till 1960 the District was called Shahpur district, as shahpur had been its headquarters in the early 19th century. Shahpur was however, twice washed away in 1849 and 1893.Sargodha is more famous for its men than for its products. It is the center of a purely agricultural based feudalistic society. Their young men smartly dressed and wearing white turbans on white chargers carry the day in manly sports like the tent-pegging; and horse riding. Because of the fine performance of the Pakistan Air Force, the city was given the title. "The City of Shaheens" in 1965.

With the exception of the Salt Range which touches it in the North, the whole of the area is plain and lies entirely between 500 and 700 feet above sea level with a gradual slope of 1-1/2 foot towards South West. Sargodha is on the PIA map with the opening of feeder service connecting it with Islamabad. The Airport is located at Bhagtanwala about 20 km from the city.

The people are tall, strong, broad faced and of wheatish complexion. The dress of the locals comprises a Majhla a Kurta or Chola a Chadar and a Turban or Pugri. It is completed by shoes, Chappli or Kheri. The women also wear Majhla (Lungi) besides Chola and Dopatta. No serarate working dress is generally worn in the district.
