The Tonga

The local version of the chariot, Tonga has been reduced to being the poor man's transport in recent years. That too is possibly on the way out. At least, so plan the city fathers in Lahore.

The case for retaining the Tonga is a cultural prop from yesteryears, dilapidated and disfigured by time, nevertheless, carrying a sentimental association. A well kept Tonga was once a status symbol, the same as the latest model of a Japanese car is today. A beautiful and expensively decorated Tonga drawn by a healthy horse, brushed to a fine shine was identified with class. Some citizens were indeed known for their Tonga carriages.

They kept "Private" tongas used it for the same purpose when the heat would be unbearable, modern comforts still a long way and fresh air to be breathed only during a drive in a tonga, with its canopy folded.
