Making Felt

Materials: deep baking trays; wool; washing up liquid; bubble wrap; spray bottles; warm or hot water

This takes up to 30 minutes to do and you do need to have somewhere to leave the felt while it dries.

Cut two pieces of bubble wrap to fit inside the tray. Lay one piece in the bottom of the tray with the bubbles facing upwards.

Starting to work horizontally across the tray, break lengths of your chosen wool to match the width, separate out the wool slightly then lay it in the tray to make a layer covering the bubble wrap.

Now work vertically and repeat step two to form another layer of felt at 90 degrees to the first layer.

Repeat step two to form a third layer.

Decorate the felt with a wool pattern (simple is best).

Put a small amount of washing-up liquid in the spray bottle, then fill it with hot/warm water (hot water works best as the wool fibres expand more).

Spray the surface of the wool with the soap solution until it is damp.

Place the second piece of bubble wrap bubble side down onto the felt.

Using small circular movements, rub the top layer of bubble wrap. This will agitate the fibres so that they begin to mat together.

Keep rubbing until the pattern is stuck to the felt, about five minutes.

Remove the bubble wrap and pick up the felt. Roll the felt into a cylinder and squeeze out some of the soap solution if it is very wet.

Roll the felt between your hands.

Un-roll the felt and roll it up the opposite way.

Repeat steps 12 and 13 until the felt has shrunk by about 20%.

Wash the felt in clean water and allow to dry
