The first settlers were mostly Presbyterians from Scotland and from the north of Ireland, the latter known by the name of Scotch-Irish. Short distance south from the middle of this township the great Chester Valley crosses it from east to west. North and south from this valley the surface is rolling like that of the other townships in the southern part of the county. The soil, especially in the Chester Valley, is fertile and well adapted to the production of the cereals that flourish in this latitude or to grazing.

Rev. John Coulter (1784-1867) He was the son of John and Abigail (Parshall) Coulter, and was born near Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, June 26th, 1784. His family was driven away from their home on the Susquehanna River by Indians. At this time Rev. Coulter was a little child, and to prevent his crying, and thus lead to their discovery by the Indians as they secretly fled, his mother had to fill his mouth with a handkerchief. After leaving Northumberland the family lived in Washington County, south of Pittsburgh, for four or five years. During this time the father went down the Ohio River with a boat load of flour; and being seized with dysentery, died, and was buried near Maysville, Kentucky. His son, John, was about five years old -- next to the youngest of ten children.

1696-1764 Lawrence Dinwiddie of Germiston (Provost of Glasgow 1742/43) a merchant in Glasgow had wide commercial interests trading with Virginia, Canada and the West Indies and a Bank. He also founded the Delftfield Pottery, Glasgow in l748, of which his brother Robert Dinwiddie (Lieut Governor of Virginia) was a partner.

LAWRENCE DINWIDDIE Dates of Election: 5th October 1742. 4th October 1743.

The family of Dinwiddle are believed to have come from Dumfrieshlre, and settled in Glasgow about the middle of the seventeenth century. Robert Dinwiddle, who founded the family In the city, became a merchant there, and had a charter of the lands of Germiston in 1691. On 2nd June, 1685, he married Elizabeth, daughter of Matthew Cumming of Carderock in the parish of Cadder, merchant in Glasgow, and on several occasions a bailie thereof. Of this union there was a family of four sons and nine daughters, of whom Lawrence was the eighth child.

Laurence married: (1) On 11th June, 1724, Janet sister of John Coulter, provost (q.v.). She was buried on 27th February 1744; (2) On 9th June 1745, Elizabeth, daughter of Gilbert Kennedy of Auchtyfardel In Lesmahagow parish. She died on 9th April, 1787.

Lawrence Dinwiddle was elected a bailie In 1734, 1738 and 1741. In 1748 be bought back the lands of Germiston and Balornoc, which his brother Matthew had inherited, but from which as a bankrupt he had been ejected, his mother Elizabeth Cumming having, amongst others, served an adjudication against him for debt. Provost Dinwiddie was one of those who was deputed to negotiate with the Young Chevaliers' representative, and was a partner in many enterprises, notably the rope work at Port Glasgow and the tannery which M'Ure calls the Old Tannery. He died on 3rd May, 1764, in his 68th year, and bequeathed 200 merks to the Merchants House. By his two marriages he had twenty-one children, probably fifteen or sixteen by his first marriage. Of these the majority died in childhood. Of this numerous progeny only the following have been traced in later life:

Dickson, "Ulster Emigration to Colonial America, 1718-1775" (Rutledge and Kegan Paul, London, 1966; in United States, distributors, Humanities Press, Inc., 303 Park Avenue S., New York, N. Y. 10010.), pages. 74-75 "North Ireland on the eve of migration" describes conditions in Ireland between 1740 and 1775:: In 1770 leases of the Earl of Donegal's county Antrim estates expired and rents were raised.

Disturbances and evictions resulted, which added to the burdens Presbyterians suffered because of their religion and the depressed condition of the linen trade.

Page 44 of "SC a Guide for Genealogists" by Theresa M. Hicks states "Chester county (around the Rocky creek area) and Abbeville county (around Long Canes) became the new home of Presbyterians primarily from Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and Ireland".

1. Rocky creek drains a large water shed that includes most of the eastern half of southern Chester county and a small part of adjacent northern Fairfield county. The 150-acre royal land grant on which my ancestors Rose and James Stewart settled in 1768 are now intersected by Stover Creek and the boundary between Chester and Fairfield counties. Stover creek is about ten feet wide and about a foot deep. It is a small southern branch of Little Rocky creek, which is about twenty feet wide and a couple feet deep. Little Rocky creek is a southern tributary of Rocky creek, which enters the Wateree River near the Fairfield county line. Wateree River is deep and several hundred feet wide. Its water flows from North Carolina south along the eastern boundaries of Chester and Fairfield counties through several large lakes to Columbia about fifty miles south, and thence to Charleston and the Atlantic ocean.

Chester County was created in 1785 from Craven and Camden Districts. Before Chester County was established in 1785, all deeds were recorded in Charleston, SC. Chester District

The Earl of Donegal" names James STUART, age 26, and Rose (WHITE?), age 22. They sailed from Belfast on 10/2/1767 arrived in Charleston, SC on December 22, 1767, where Protestants (SC has few Catholics) received Bounty Act "royal" land grants from King George III: James and Rose STEWART received 150 acres (surrounded by vacant land) now owned by WS and Robert Storment BANKHEAD and located where Stover Creek (a branch of Little Rocky Creek) intersects the Chester/Fairfield County line. James was a soldier of the Revolution in the SC State Militia, for which service James' wife Rose (Rosannah) received James' pension after James died, at age 90 on 10/2/1829, according to his Scottish style tombstone in the old "Stewart" or "McDonald" cemetery, located a few hundred feet from Stover Creek in woods now or formerly owned by Edward H. MILLS of Whiteoak

The 1810 Chester County, SC census record (see ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sc/chester/census/ches1810.txt ) probably lists Robert STEWART (born 1784) and his father James STEWART (died 10/2/1829):

STEWART Robert Archibald STEWART and Alexander STEWART belong to a different Stewart family. According to a book of Fairfield marriages, Alexander Stewart died in 1855 and married to Nancy M. Lathan, living in 1855 and 1858. Mary E. Stewart (born abt. 1852) was the daughter of Alexander Stewart and married J. B. Montgomery, who was alive in 1873. Recent Fairfield County Sheriff Montgomery might be related to these Stewarts. Archibald Stuart was born 2/12/1745 in SC, the child of Thomas Stuart and Elisabeth Moore.

Could this James Stewart/Stuart be related to Martha Stuart? That I found on the net or Mary Stuart who is said to Robert Coulter wife.

The family story/Legend is of the name Coulter, my mother's maiden name, back to Scotland. The earliest record known of the Coulter heritage started with Robert Coulter who was a guard for Prince Charles of Scotland, and called a Jacobite. He fought in the Battle of Culloden and was seriously injured. A man from the Clan of Cameron threw him over a horse and sent the horse off down the road. After some time Robert Coulter fell from his horse. He regained his bearings and hid in a cave, later to escape by slipping into a group forced to go to Ireland. He was told not to mix with the Irish. In Ireland resentment ran high for various reasons and the Irish began killing the Scots. Robert was married to Mary Ann Stuart of the Royal House of Stuart

As for Robert being at the Battle of Culloden, there is no mention of a Coulter being there but there was family name Cumming. Could Robert service under his mother name is the question? Is so then he could have when back to Scotland and got his family and went to Ireland, that is if married before 1747. Or did he go to Ireland and marry there, there fore his children were all born in Ireland. At this time there is no answer to these question. There is one more question where did Robert Stuart Coulter get his middle name?

Robert Coulter b 1711 d after 1780 SC m�d Mary maiden could be Stewart/Stuart. I am told that Mary was born in Ireland and her maiden name was Stuart or Stewart. Mary Stuart was said to be a descendant of the British or Scottish Royal Family. However, the claim that she was descended from a King of Scotland is very old. . I have not been able to find a family tree showing this, or even to find out the name of the King from which she was supposedly descended. King James IV and King James V of Scotland both had many mistresses and many bastard children, so it was presumably one of them. Read what found below.

The BOUNTY ACT

In order to keep an exploding Negro population from overwhelming civilization (as it did in Haiti), on July 25, 1761 the General Assembly of South Carolina passed the Bounty Act. Which required the Public Treasury to exchange money for Bounty Certificates issued by the Governor's Board of SC to compensate (via Agents who received the Certificates) ship owners or masters for transporting emigrants who could certify that they were Protestants (in other words, northern Europeans). The names and ages of passengers and the names of the ships on which they traveled were recorded in the Council Journals of South Carolina.

The Governor's Board also authorized its Secretary to prepare Warrants to survey the land that was to be granted to the emigrants in two new townships: Long Canes (near the Boonesborough Township), and Belfast. Protestant petitioners fifteen or more years old were entitled to 100 acres per head of household, plus 50 acres per dependent.

The outlines of boundaries shown on modern county property tax maps are almost the same as those shown on the original land survey plats, especially in rural areas (even if a tract has been subdivided). Although tracing the title may be difficult, centuries of tax, deed, probate, etc. records probably contain information about the precise geographic location of these land grants, the names of those who have since owned, bought or inherited them, and the ownership of adjacent tracts.
