Strand A: Instruction
III. Instructional Record
Rhythm Sheets (Entire group, 3-4 minutes a day)
The metronome would be turned on and together with the students we would count each line two ways: Down-Up system & the Eastman Counting system. The students would then "airband" it while I continued to count the rhythm outloud.  Finally, the students would play the rhythm on their instrument in time with the metronome.  If not understood, entire process repeated.
Through this, the students become accustomed to counting and playing rhythms in preparation for what they may encounter in the future.  This also enhances their numeracy and fraction skills when they encounter syncopated rhythms.
Line Pass Off Tests (Individually, 15-20 minutes every other day)
Students have to pass lines out of their method book for a grade and to advance on to the next line.  As the teacher, I listen for pulse, correct notes, correct rhythms, correct posture, correct hand position, and correct embouchure.
Students learn to increase their range on their instrument and to apply their growing knowledge of rhythms.  The students also learn that through correct posture and hand position, their sound quality is increased.
Breathing Excercises  (Entire group, 3-5 minutes a day)
Either from the teacher or from the video Breathing Gym, students are instructed to perform certain types of breathing excercises.  They all stand up and practice correct inhalation and exhalation of air, correlated through  visual reinforcement. The students learn the difference between breathing normally and breathing for their instrument.  They learn about their respiratory system and the things that can affect correct inhalation and exhalation.
Performance Videos (Entire group, 45 minutes once a week)
Once a week a video was shown to demonstrate how what they are learning in the classroom can be and is applied by other musicians around the world.  Before the video, the teacher posed some questions for them to think about while they watched the video.  After the video, a short discussion was held concerning those questions to affirm any new knowledge.
