'SOLO & ACOUSTIC' TOUR - February 2004 Atricle by Warner/Atlantic Music Australia Jewel recently told the Las Vegas Review Journal, "I don't even try to sing great in the studio. It doesn't inspire me at all. When I'm live, and there's an audience, I sing fifty times better than on the record". When you consider that Jewel has sold over 19 million units internationally (of which 1 million units are in Australia alone) and her latest album 0304 went Gold just on the strength of her single Intuition, her comment seems somewhat bizarre. Consider further that in Australia previous albums This Way (Gold), Spirit (2 x Platinum), and Pieces Of You (6 x Platinum) were major critical and commercial successes and her remark seems somewhat ludicrous. Yet at the same time you have to feel some satisfaction with her statement because if she's that good on an album and her live shows are fifty times better, then her upcoming tour of Australia in February 2004 will be truly spectacular! Yes, that's right, The Frontier Touring Company in conjunction with Roundhouse Entertainment are delighted to confirm that Jewel will bring her solo and acoustic tour to Australia next year. Already touring the United States in 2003, this highly anticipated tour will include a limited number of theatre and a day on the green winery shows, the perfect vehicles to experience Jewel as she strips back her music to its roots. With a decade of material to choose from, Jewel Solo & Acoustic is a must see for both her long time and newly won fans. It's been a long five years since Australians were last treated to a Jewel concert. The 'Spirit Tour' was embraced fondly by Australians with every venue completely sold out.  Much water has passed under the bridge and not without controversy. The folksie Jewel felt a need to reinvent herself/explore new horizons but many saw this as a blatant sellout. Her fans were now divided into two camps: the 'Old Intimate Jewel' and the 'New Pop Jewel'. Combined, Pieces Of You and Spirit achieved a phenomenal 8 x platinum while (although not to be underrated) This Way and 0304 both achieved a comparatively modest gold status. So, if record sales are an indicator, the 'Old' Jewel was more successful by far. Ironically, in her quest to expand to a more popular audience, she inadvertently became less popular. And... many a scribe for the music press were less than sympathetic. This site has never been unbiased! We simply adore the 'Old' Jewel and wish she'd leave the pop bimbette stuff to Britney, Aguilera or our own Kylie. By writing totally absurd (but always fun) articles, we've fought relentlessly, tooth and nail, for our 'Old' Jewel back. Well, right now we are simply OVER THE MOON !!! The forthcoming event is called the 'Solo and Acoustic' tour... yep, it's the 'Old' Jewel doing what she does best... enchanting her audience with her wonderful unique voice and her inspiring original songs. So, to all her new 0304 fans, we strongly suggest you attend the concert and discover for yourselves what the controversy is all about. And, we're pretty sure, you'll soon be racing off to the nearest record store chasing up your own copy of the evergreen, 'Spirit'. And to Jewel... simply this...
