During the English Civil War, the Roundheads were famed for their heavy iron pothelms whereas the Cavaliers with their leather and felt hats lacked vital protection.

To solve this problem one smart person started making skullcaps called �Secrets� to sew in under the hats and protect the head and skull of the wearer. Hence the term �Keep it secret, keep it under your hat�
