Subject: [Witherington] Carney Worthington anyone?
Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 22:38:59 EST
Yes, we know him as Worthington, but I'm pretty sure he came into this
life as a Witherington/Weatherington, or maybe
some other variation. He is Carney Worthington (pretty sure not from Sam
and Eliz Carney Worthington who went to TN.) Born in 1806/7 in Hookerton,
Greene Cty., NC. Married to Susan (Susanah) Turnage. Offspring (from
the1850 Census, greene co census) are: James G. , Martha A., Hannah, Jane E.,
Charles S., Josiah, Drucilla, Thomas , Susan M., Seleta Ann, Margaret. He was
a farmer and a cooper.
Have found common given names in Turnage and Carney line, the most
interesting in Josiah and Drucilla. Have not been able to hook up Carneys to
Witheringtons. I believe he belongs to the Witherington group because of
a biographical brief about his grandson Heber Worthington who was a sheriff
of/in Lenoir County around the turn of the centuty (20th). It mentions his
grandfather (Carney), "a lifelong resident of Greene co. whose ancestors
are counted amongst the early settlers who assisted in the subjugation of the
indian tribes." (Ouch, don't really like that part) He was potically
active and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South
I seen have a lot of land documents (transcribes on the internet) that show
Witheringtons purchasing land in this area so he's likely a Witherington, but
was hoping someone out there had come across this orphan. Thanks for any
leads.

Lisa and I have already exchanged information. Our WORTHINGTON families
were in the same vicinity of Greene and Pitt Counties in North Carolina. I
believe that Lisa's ancestor Carney WORTHINGTON must be a descendant of
Solomon WITHERINGTON of Craven County, NC, but do not know who Carney's father
could be. Look, we both have a Grover Cleveland WORTHINGTON, not the same
person however. He was a popular president - with lots of namesakes. Lots of
WITHERINGTON descendants in Pitt County, NC spell their name WORTHINGTON As
for the various lists, I am on the WITHERINGTON-L, WETHINGTON-L, and the
WORTHINGTON-L
***************
Here is a great example of what Barry is saying. These three variations are
all within the same document. Weatherington, C.S. 66th Reg. Co.I Weathington,
W.T. 17th Reg. Co.K Wetherington, Shadrick W. 66th Reg. Co.F DIS (Greene
County, North Carolina Confederate Soldiers and CSA Government Employees
Compiled by Mike Edge 1999.) I'm certain that W.T. is my g-g-grandfather
William Thomas. And I'm fairly certain that the C.S. is his brother Charles.
Not sure which line Shadrick comes from. I know that by the time that William
Thomas' daughter Emma Lee married, she was a Worthington, as were her many
brothers and sisters. Also in the 1850 Greene Co. census (transcribed) Carney
and family were WOTHINGTONs. So believe me, I try every variation I can think
of when I search. That's why I'm pretty sure my Worthingtons were
Witheringtons. Also, last night I found in the Witherington-L archives, a
message (from Roger Kammerer's 3,486 Rough Notes from Pitt Co. Deedbooks GG -
SS) listing a deed transfer (?) "1011. Wm. G. Turnage of Greene Co., and
Carney Witherington of Greene Co.; 1840 [KK, p. 15]" Excellent find for
me since Turnage was his father in law.
