"Catching the Tilt-boat from Gravesend"

 (From a print by P C Canot c1753)

"Gravesend was linked with London in being the place of final provisioning of ships sailing to the East Indies until London docks were constructed in the 1820's. It was also the point from which water passage was taken by travellers journeying to London. This later mode of travel was more effective than use of the poor roads then available. Tilt-boats became the usual means of conveyance to and from London in the seventeenth century, and from 1737 no tilt-boat was to be less than fifteen tons and a tilt or awning provided as shelter for passengers, as seen in the illustration."                                                                      Eric R Swain "O' Famous Kent"
