"Gravesend was linked with London in being the place
of final provisioning of ships sailing to the East Indies until
London docks were constructed in the 1820's. It was also the
point from which water passage was taken by travellers journeying
to London. This later mode of travel was more effective than
use of the poor roads then available. Tilt-boats became the usual
means of conveyance to and from London in the seventeenth century,
and from 1737 no tilt-boat was to be less than fifteen tons and
a tilt or awning provided as shelter for passengers, as seen
