She was a gentle woman living with Lois� parents when Jim Gazzaway first met her in 1945. She enjoyed her grand children and great grandchildren very much and would tease them and they would tease her. She would sit quietly before the fireplace and gently rock back and forth in her padded rocking chair.
She lived with Alfred and Bertie until her death in Marshall County, near Grant, Alabama and is buried near Grant, Alabama
Alfred and Bertie Leona Hayes were married on January 13, 1916 in the home of J. C. Baker and to this union was born - Newman B. (Initial only) on April 7, 1920, Lois Esma January 20, 1923, Dortha Lou November 22, 1925, Eugene Davis June 13, 1929 and Ferrell Scott July 10, 1934.
Alfred served in World War 1 and was gassed while in Europe but survived to rear his family on the farm and endured the great depression by the sweat of his brow. He was a loving father and husband who enjoyed fishing and playing games, especially dominoes. He died on January 11, 1959 after saying the blessing at the dinner table and falling forward.
Alfred is buried in Freehome Cemetery near Grant, Alabama
She worked hard to help rear her family and endured the great depression at Alfred�s side. She was a faithful Christian who saw to it that her children grew up in the admonition of the Lord. She was a member of the Church of Christ and through her influence Alfred was converted and her two daughters were baptized at an early age.
Bertie cooked on a wood cook stove without electricity until her daughter Lois had the house wired for electricity in the 1940�s and the TVA ran power across Simpson�s Point Mountain.
Bertie died on May 18, 1970 and is buried beside A lfred in Freehome Cemetery near Grant, Alabama.
