Flags

In the early '80s many Gay men adopted the custom of wearing flags. Although the style began in Leather Bars, it was soon adopted in all sorts of gay clubs and on the streets. A flag is a colored bandanna worn so that it protrudes slightly from either the right or left rear pocket of jeans (Levis or Wranglers only!) The purpose was to signal to others what your sexual appetites were that day. Lately, I've noticed that they seem to be showing up again in some of the clubs. Since the guys who are wearing them now are too young to know the protocol, and some of us who were around then probably need a refresher course, I'm going to give you the basics. You should note, though, that there may be some differences from city to city (this seems to be especially true of red) so before you waltz into a bar with with your colors hanging out, you might want to inquire about what the local customs are. One thing that does remain constant is the location. Worn on the left, the flag signifies dominance, a top -- worn on the right, submission, a bottom.

In keeping with GeoCities policy, I have cleaned this up some, but you get the idea.

Gives a whole different slant on the Rainbow Flag, doesn't it?

A word of caution. Sadly, street gangs have adopted bandannas as their "colors" and can get quite testy about their use. It might be a good idea to refrain from waving your flag where it might be misinterpreted.
