Eggs
I like to begin my unit with a KWL chart, asking the students which animals come from eggs. Every year I have students who say cats or dogs or even elephants, and I think, "We really need to do this unit.!" By the end of the unit we have little sophisticated learners who can tell you that a platypus comes from an egg. I like to start this unit 2 weeks before Easter so we can color eggs and have a hunt at the conclusion. In later weeks I can extend the unit with mini-studies about frogs, dinosaurs, or caterpillars.
