          The Gingerbread Man

I like to start the month of December with a unit on the story of the gingerbread man. It is a good non-holiday story that blends easily into Christmas festivities. Every year I seem to have a student who requests that we sing the song about  "gingerman", so I have come to think of this fondly as the gingerman unit.

We use interactive writing to write letters to the gingerbread man and the fox.

I made bingo boards for the numbers 1 - 20. We use gingerbread man erasers to cover the spaces.

We read different versions of the story and graph the favorite by putting dots on the doors and windows of a big gingerbread house.

I read the book called The Gingerbread Christmas and we watch the video. These dolls go with the story.

These corkboard houses are decorated with puffy paint, sequins, a picture in the window, and a gingerbread man eraser in the door.  A magnet goes on the back.

At the  end of the unit I bake giant gingerbread cookies and little ones for each child. When it is time to eat them they have run away ( with a little help from another adult.) We chase them around the school and when we return there is a treat waiting for us.  Each child gets a small bag decorated with gingerbread men  with cookies and candy kisses in it.  I was lucky enough to find darling placemats and I have laminated them so they will last me until retirement!
