Herman and Mary Merten

Herman Heinrich Abraham MERTENborn 27 Jul 1827, Aachen, Westphalia, Prussia (now Aachen, Germany), son of Hermann Heinrich and Carolina Sybilla (HULLENHUTTER) MERTEN. He died 2 Jan 1908, Villa Ridge, Missouri.
    Herman married Anna Maria Elisabeth "Mary" EILERS 4 Mar 1851, St. Peters German Evangelical Church, St. Louis, Missouri. (She was Catholic and he was not, so they married in a Protestant Church.) She was born 4 Dec 1831, Hanover, Hesse, Prussia, the daughter of Bernhair Alber and Mary Gertrude EILERS. She died 10 Jan 1909, Villa Ridge, Missouri.
    On 11 Aug 1850, the census shows Hermann MERTEN age 21 living in St. Louis, Missouri. Also with him was his sister, Caroline MERTEN age 21. Also living with them was Frederik BRUCE age 19. All three born in Germany. Hermann and Frederik were listed as Wagonmakers.
    In 1860, I can't find Herman and his family in any census record.
    On 16 Jun 1870, the census shows Herman (42) and Mary (39) MERTEN living in Meridian Township, Clinton County, Illinois. With them were their children Edward age 16; Emily age 14; Gustavus age 11; Caroline age 9; George age 7; and Herman age 3. Herman was listed as a farmer. His real estate was valued at $450.00. His personal property was valued at $350.00. Edward, Emily and Gustavus were born in Missiouri. Caroline, George and Herman were born in Illinois. They had a Carlyle Post Office.
    On 1 Jun 1880, the census shows Herman (52) and Mary (48) MERTEN living in East Fork Township, Clinton County, Illinois. With them were their children Edward age 26; Gustavus age 21; Caroline age 18; George age 17; Herman age 13; Adolph age 9, and Clara age 6. Herman was a farmer. The census shows that Herman was born in Achens. It shows his father born in W. Failia and his mother in Achens. It shows that Mary was born in Hanover, as well as her parents. This census differs from the 1870 census in that it shows Edward, Gustavus, Caroline and George having been born in Missouri. In the previous census it showed Caroline and George having been born in Illinois. It shows Herman, Adolph and Clara having been born in Illinois.
    On 16 Jun 1900, the census shows Herman (72) and Mary A. (68) MERTEN living in Central Township, Franklin County, Missouri. With them was their daughter Clara G. age 22, born Jul 1877 (Note: family records state that she was born 15 May 1874. SF). The census states that Mary had given birth to 10 children and that only 6 were still living. It shows that Herman came to this country from Germany in 1839. It shows that Mary came in 1844. Herman was listed as a farmer. The census showed that Herman owned his own farm. It also showed that he had not worked in the last 12 months.
    Herman, as his father, engaged in the mercantile business. He first lived in St. Louis and later Sandoval. He moved his family to Sandoval, Marion County, Illinois. The first of the Merten family to live in Marion County. He was a merchant.
    During the Civil War, he was a Sergeant of the Marion County Division, Co. E, 62nd Ill, Vol Inf. Regt. Helping to lead the Union to victory over oppression and division.

Edward Wilhelm MERTEN, born 10 mar 1854, St. Louis, Missouri, Herman Heinrich Abraham and Anna Maria Elisabeth (EILERS) MERTEN. He died 24 Feb 1921, Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. Edward and Wilhamenia are both buried in the Sandoval Cemetery.
    Edward married Wilhamenia C. "Minnie" WEDEL 20 Apr 1881. She was born 22 Jul 1862, Clinton County, Illinois, daughter of Herman Frederick and Wilhamenia (WHERNHART) WEDEL. She died 12 Feb 1949.
    On 1 Jun 1900, the census shows Edward (46) and Minnie C. (38) MERTENS living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Edna C. age 18; Ralph C. age 16; Cora age 12; Harry age 10; Carl H. age 8; Orrin W. age 9 months. Edward was a merchant. He owned his own home free of morgage. Minnie had give birth to 8 children with only 6 living at time of census.
    On 15 Apr 1910 the census shows Edward W. (56) and Minnie C. (47) MERTEN living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Cora age 22; Harry L. age 20; Carl H. age 18; and Orin N. age 10. Edward was listed as a farmer. He owned his farm free of morgage.
    In 1920, the census shows Edward (65) and Minnie (57) MERTEN living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them was their son Orrin age 20. Edward was a farmer and he owned his home and farm free of morgage.

    Edna married Frank Harold HARKER 19 Dec 1906. He was born 21 Nov 1878, Milford, Ohio, son of Charles P. and Laura (CHANEY) HARKER. He died 9 Jul 1973.
    On 26 Apr 1910, the census shows Frank H. (31) and Edna C. (28) HARKER living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them was their daughter Viola F. age 3 months. They were living with Frank's widowed father, Charles P. and Frank's sister Blanche. Frank was farming.
    In 1920, the census shows Frank H. (41) and Edna (37) HARKER living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Viola age 9; Wayne age 8; Carol age 4 years and 3 months; and Dale age 1 year and 2 months. They were renting.
    In Apr 1930, the census shows Frank H. (51) and C. Edna (48) HARKER living Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children N. Wayne age 19; J. Carol age 14; L. Dale age 11. Frank was a farmer. He owned his own farm.
    Edna was a member of the Sandoval United Methodist Church.

2-1-1. Viola Frances HARKER, born 9 Jan 1910, Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois. She died 3 Feb 1997, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois. She is buried at Peaceful Valley Cemetery in Odin, Illinois.
    Viola married Glen HICKS, 8 May 1932, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois.
    Viola was a rural school teacher in the Odin area. She taught piano for 25 years. She lived in the Odin/Sandoval area her whole life. She was a member of the Sandoval United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and served as pianist for over 30 years. She was president of the ladies group of Marion County Farm Bureau and president of Sandoval PTA. She also belonged to the Odin Brick Get Together Club.

    Harry married 2nd Agnes M. HARDER 15 Jun 1920. She was born 1900/01, Germany.
    On 2 Apr 1930, the census shows Harry L. (40) and Agnes M. (29)MERTENS living in Fergus County, Montana. With them were their sons Edward W. age 8; and Harry L. age 6. They were renting their home for $10.00 a month. Harry was a Telegrapher for the Rail Road.

Ralph Clifford MERTEN, Sr., born 26 May 1911, Marion County, Illinois, son of Ralph Cornelius and Myrtle Adelia (MARCHAM) MERTEN, Clinton County, Illinois. He died 9 Feb 1990, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois. He is buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia.
    Clifford married Myrtle Emily GRINER 30 Nov 1933, Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois.
    They were members of the United Methodist Church in Sandoval, Illinois. Clifford was a Sunday school teacher there for many years.
    From 1933 to 1943, Clifford operated a restaurant at the Y in Sandoval.
    From 1943 to 1950 he managed the Southern Gardens Restaurant in Salem until.
    From 1950 to 1958, he managed the Salem Elks Club.
    From 1958 to 1973, he worked at Seigler Stove Company as a salesman.
    From 1973 to 1981, he worked as a traveling chef for Arkla Industries, demonstrating gas grills.
    He was a member of the AF&AM Sandoval Lodge 932, Illinois LP Gas Association, Elks Club and Lions Club.

    Ralph married Alice P. RAPPOLEE 21 Oct 1961, Sandoval, Marion County, Illinois. Alice was born 24 Oct 1939, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of William A. and Virginia D. (GODBEY) PAPPOLEE. Alice died 25 Oct 2004, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois.
    They lived for several years in Louisville, Kentucky. They later divorced.
    Alice moved back to Centralia in 1989. Alice had been employed by Walmart for 20 years.

    On 27 Oct 2004, the Centralia Sentinel has, "Alice MERTEN - CENTRALIA � Alice P. MERTEN, 65, of Centralia died Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Sandoval with the Rev. Clayton Coffey officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. MERTEN has been a member of Beta Club, National English Honor Society, FHA, band, and Tech Prep. She has served on the Sandoval High School Student Council, Beta Club Leadership Committee, and as classs officer during her junior year. In addition, MERTEN has participated in volleyball and scholar bowl. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clicker MERTEN of Sandoval, she has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average throughout high school, is a National Honor Roll member, is listed in "Who's Who Among American High School Students," and is an Illinois State Scholar. MERTEN will begin her pursuit of a doctorate in pharmacy in the fall of 2008 at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy."
    On 6 Jun 2008, the Salem Times-Commoner has, "Sandoval HS valedicotorians, salutatorian named -- Kelly MERTEN, daughter of Ralph and Amy MERTEN, and Nathan ROHNER, son of John and Margarite ROHNER, were co-valedictorians for the Sandoval High School graduations Class of 2008. Caroline Josephine MERTEN, born 10 Dec 1860, daughter of Herman Heinrich Abraham and Anna Maria Elisabeth (EILERS) MERTEN. She died 1931.
    She married John B. GEIGER 8 Feb 1888. He was born 5 Mar 1857, Meridian Township, Clinton County, Illinois, son of George & Augusta GEIGER.
    At the age of 22, John began farming on his own.
    The photo at right is the home of John and Caroline GEIGER in Meridian Township, Clinton County, Illinois. The photo was taken by my grandmother, Beatrice MERTEN.
    John and Caroline settled on 88 acres on section 1 of Meridian Township, land that was given to him by his father. He was a prosperous farmer.
    In Jun 1900, the census shows John (43) and Caroline (39) GEIGER living in Meridian Township, Clinton County, Illinois. With them were thier children John C. age 9; George H. age 7; Olive age 5; and Walter age 4. John was a farmer and owned his farm free of morgage.
    On 30 Jan 1920, the census shows John (63) and Caroline (59) GEIGER living in Meridian Township, Clinton County, Illinois. With them were their sons Walter age 23; and Adolph age 18. John owned his own home and farm free of morgage.
    On 12 Apr 1930, the census shows John (73) and Caroline (69) GEIGER living in Meridian Township, Clinton County, Illinois. With them was their son Adolph age 29. John owned his own home and it was valued at $6,000.00. He was listed as a retired farmer.
    John was Catholic and Caroline was a Lutheran.
    John belonged to the Democrat Party.

    Walter married Nellie G. WEBBER 19 Oct 1927, Union, Missouri. She was born 6 Nov 1897, Bardwell, Kentucky, daughter of William Thomas and Augusta Emma (BRIDGEMAN) WEBBER. (The Webbers were living in Morehouse, New Madrid, Missouri in 1900 Census with five of their children: Harry, Daisy D., Walter W., Nellie G. and Carl J. with three children having already died. Emma died before 1910 and the children were put in an orphanage in St. Louis. Twin of Carl, Clyde, had died at about age 2. Herman had also died. 8th child�s name not known.) Nellie was raised by Clara MERTEN (See # 10 following) Nellie died Thursday, 27 Mar 1997, Sandoval, Illinois at the age of 99.
    On 12 Apr 1930, the census shows Walter (32) and Nellie (31) GEIGER living in Meridian Township, Clinton County, Illinois. With them was their daughter Dorothy Louise age 1. Walter was a farmer.
    Nellie was a member of the Sandoval Christian Church. She taught Sunday school for 36 years.

    George married Martha "Mattie" COPELAND 1881/82. She was born Sep 1863, Missouri.
    On 28 Jun 1900, the census shows George H. (37) and Mattie (36) MERTENS living in Boles Township, Franklin County, Missouri. With them were their children, Bessie age 8; Earl age 7; and Gordon age 1. Also living with them was their nephew Carlos COPEHART age 21. (Note: this is probably COPELAND and not COPEHART.) Mattie had given birth to 3 children with all 3 living. George was a Dealer in General Merchandise.
    On 3 May 1910, the census shows George H. (47) and Martha (46) MERTEN living in Boles Township, Franklin County, Missouri. With them were their children Carl B. age 17; and Gordon B. age 11. They also had an 18 year old servant girl living with them named Hallah KESSANK. George was a merchant. He had a general store. He owned his home and business free of morgage. Carl was working in his father's store.
    On 28 Feb 1920, the census shows George H. (57) and Martha (57) MERTEN living in Boles Township, Franklin County, Missouri. With them was their adopted son Robert (BRIGLEY?) age 11. Also living with them was a border John COLEMAN age 40. George owned his home and farm free of morgage.
    On 17 Jun 1930, the census shows George H. MERTEN age 67, living in Boles Township, Franklin County, Missouri. He was living with friends William and Addie K. SCHAFFERKOETTER. George was a notary public.

Clara Gertrude MERTEN, born 15 May 1874, daughter of Herman Heinrich Abraham and Anna Maria Elisabeth (EILERS) MERTEN. He died 2 Nov 1970.
    Clara raised Nellie WEBBER, who married Clara�s nephew, William Walter GEIGER.
    (Nellie and Carl WEBBER were just two of eight children who were orphaned with the death of their mother. Their father put them into an orphanage in St. Louis.)
    Clara had a poultry farm in Central Township, Franklin County, Missouri.
    Clara and her brother, Adolph, had connecting farms. They later moved into Union and built homes next to each other so that Nellie and Carl could be raised together.
    On 29 Apr 1910, the census shows Clara MERTEN age 35 living in Central Township, Franklin County, Missouri. With here was Nellie Weber age 12. Clara owned her own farm free of morgage.
    On 22 Jan 1920, the census shows Clara G. MERTEN, age 45, living in Central Township, Franklin County, Missouri. With her was Nellie WEBER age 22. Clara owned her own home and poultry farm free of morgage.
    In 1930, the census show Clara living with her brother, Adolph MERTEN.
    Clara later move in with Nellie and Walter GEIGER in Marion County, Illinois.
