LUIS O. FERRER, SR. (1872-1942)
LUIS
O. FERRER, SR. was the sixth governor of Cavite under the American regime. He
was the first of the father-son tandem to govern Cavite, the father in 1919-
1921, and the son in 1940-1944. The second father-son team was that of
Justiniano S. Montano (former
representative and senator) and his son, Delfin N.
Montano, governor of Cavite for four consecutive terms.
Born
on August 19, 1872, in San Francisco de Malabo (now General Trias), to a
well-to-do couple, Francisco Ferrer and Florentina Olimpo, Luis Sr. had an
elder brother, Doroteo, and a sister, Maria. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts
degree from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in 1898 or 1899, after which he
finished law at the University of Sto. Tomas, the only institution offering a
law course before the turn of the century.
Surviving
relatives of Luis, Sr. claim that he served as either secretary of treasurer in
the Aguinaldo revolutionary government. He was elected twice as municipal
president of San Francisco de Malabon, the first time in 1903 and the second in
1916 or 1917. He was the incumbent president when the law authored by
Representative Emilio Virata, 1919-1922, was passed by the Philippine
Legislature renaming San Francisco de Malabon after general Trias, in honor of
the town’s favorite son.
Luis,
Sr. was married to Isabel Asuncion, by whom he begot three children; namely,
Jose (deceased), Luis, Jr. (deceased), married to Martina Sarayba, and Aurora,
married to Dr. Vicente Poblete (deceased) Luis, Sr. died on January 6, 1942.
