In 1990, KCVPS in cooperation with Historic York, Inc. conducted
a survey of buildings and sites 50 years old and older in Hellam
Township. Hallam Borough was previously surveyed in 1981. The
survey indicates that two of the earliest Germanic structures
in York County, the Dietz and Shultz houses are located in Hallam
Borough. Moreover the rural landscape of the Hellam Valley is
of interest because it contains the entire range of architectural
styles from medieval Gernmanic to Georgian to the more elaborate
Federal and Victorian varieties in an almost textbook-like setting.
The primary building materials are log, limestone and brick. It
was also discovered that more historically significant sites are
located in Hellam/Hallam than any other municipality in York County
and a large percentage of the sites are in very good condition.
KCVPS has compiled information on original road dockets, deeds,
area photographs, early real estate transactions and family genealogy.
We have and are continuing to conduct interviews with our long
time residents to establish an oral history archive. We have also
assimilated a collection of early 20th century postcards depicting
local scenes. We are constantly gathering further information
and memorabilia regarding our area.
