Before joining GMA, he was a vice-president and a member of the board of directors of Radio Mindanao Network - one of the biggest privately-owned radio networks in the Philippines.

Mike also became the general manager of FBS Radio Network which at one time saw its Metro Manila AM and FM stations both simultaneously dominating their respective markets. He has also taught Broadcast Management at De La Salle University - one of the countrys most prestigious institutions of learning.

Mike started his broadcasting career in 1969 as a staff announcer of the Manila Broadcasting Company. Since then, he has done work in various fields of broadcasting - from journalism to programming and senior management. He is also known in the broadcast industry for his active involvement in the Kapisanan Ng Mga Brodkaster Sa Pilipinas (Association of Broadcasters in the Philippines). He was the founding chairman of its Metro Manila chapter. He has served as its vice-president for radio, vice-president for television and as executive vice-president. In 1991 he was the chairman of the board and in 1992, he was the president. That was a challenging year for Philippine broadcasting. It was the first time free national elections were being held since 1969.

Aside from his role as a broadcast executive, Mike is also one of two anchors of GMA Networks prime time television newscast 24 Oras. He also hosts a popular radio program from 6:00 to 8 a.m. from Mondays through Fridays on GMAs flagship station DZBB. He hosts another television program on GMA - Imbestigador which features bold investigative reports every Saturday at 8 p.m.. It is currently one of the Networks highest-rating once-a-week prime time programs.

In January 2003, the GMA late-night newscast Saksi won the gold medal in the New York Festivals. Mike was among those who pioneered the program which he also anchored until his new assignment in 24 Oras.

Just before the war in Iraq broke out, Mike led a six-man GMA news team into Baghdad from where they filed live reports. They were the first Filipino journalists to cover the war right inside Iraq. While the fighting was going on, Mike was also sent to Kuwait from where he did live reports. He and his co-members of GMAs Team Baghdad produced a documentary called Iraq - In the Navel of War which won the Silver Camera Award in the 2004 US Film and Video Festival in Los Angeles.

Mike spearheaded GMAs radio expansion program. When he joined the network in late 1995 it had only four stations. Today GMA has 31 stations in all major radio areas throughout the Philippines.

Mike is a recipient of the 1999 Golden Dove Award for Best Male Newscaster and of the Ka Doroy Valencia Broadcaster of the Year Award given by the Kapisanan Ng Mga Bordkaster Ng Pilipinas (KBP). He also received the Star Award for Best Male Newscaster of 1999 from the Philippine Movie Press Club of the Philipines. His 1999 grand slam was completed when he won the award for Best Newscaster in the Asian Television Awards held in Singapore. He is the only Filipino to win that award so far.
