Ok, this one is kind of special. Animal farm is based on a very popular and controversial book by George Orwell. This story depicts the rise of communism in such an interesting way. Well, I've only read about half the book but I liked what I saw so far. This DVD was one of the 1$ DVDs at Wal-Mart so I couldn't resist picking it up.
First off there's farmer Jones, a violent drunk who is naturally despised by all the animals on his farm, so much in fact that they plot against him. The thing about him is he kind of has the look of a zombie. It seems effective for his character. Soon comes the moment for the animals to take the farm for themselves. Ahh, but who would have though they could succeed and actually drive the evil farmer out? Suddenly the farm is theirs, but what next?
The story of how they destroy one system only to be trapped in an equally oppressive society is interesting indeed. I'm not sure if this film has a rating but I think you can show it to your kids without any problems. Apparently the ending however was changed to be more upbeat than the book ending, much to the dismay of many fans of the original story. It seems the movie was made as anti-communist propoganda at the time.
Many of us wouldn't care to watch an old propaganda movie like this but you might find it amusing anyway, especially the apple math scnene.
The pigs:
Napoleon: (Stallin) Most corrupt of the pigs. He siezes power
Snowball: (Trotski) She gets run out of the farm when Napoleon turns the others against her.

Other animals:
Boxer: A strong workhorse, but what happens when he can no longer work?

The humans:

Farmer Jones: a decriped old drunk with a nasty mean streak about him and a 5 O'clock shadow that goes clear up to his nose.
