Method for understanding physical world Deals with material things- can be measured- nature centered Tests hypothoses Idea of how world works Generates questions- if hyp true, then something else should be true Tests questions- are corollaries true? trying to disprove them Accept, reject, or modify hypothesis Hypothesis must be testable and reproducable Constantly being refined Should be objective- true or false Theories are broad-based hyp that can explain general phenomena Theories are not "guesses"; they have stood up to testing Religion different from science, not incompatable Religion deals with supernatural- human's relationship to it and to each to each other Natural world explained only in its relationship to humans Cannot be tested- cannot prove/disprove existence of God, soul, afterlife Known though revelation- changes little Matters of morality- right & wrong Theory of Evolution has been battleground between science and religion Evolution contradicts literal interpretation of Genesis Bible central to Protestant belief system- Catholics went through this with Galileo; even the Pope has said Evolution not anti-religious For this class, not asking you to believe evolutionn, just know what it's about Religion & Science deal with different data & use different methods Lots of scientists, now & past, also religious Belief should be kept to things that cannot be proven/disproven Slide show- Tour of GBY
