The Artesian Well of Bollinger County

Very few artesian wells are left in southeast Missouri.  However if a family is just wanting to take a Sunday drive a visit to the well is an excellent choice.  Here is a photo of the well.

What is an artesian well?

An artesian well is an underground water supply with enough water pressure that the water is forced to the surface.  Picture a water fountain in school.  Now image someone holding the button to make the water shoot up all the time.  The water that comes out of artesian wells is as cold as water coming out of a good water fountain.  Many people bring jugs and bottles to fill up with pure ice cold water when they visit the well.  Notice the well is capped off.  If it was not capped, the water would just shoot straight up and go everywhere.  As the swamps in southeast Missouri were drained for development, fewer and fewer artesian wells existed.  This is some of the best drinking water in the world!!

The artesian well in Bollinger County is located one mile west of Woodland Schools.  It is on Highway 34 West.  If you are in Cape County it will take 30 minutes to one hour to get to the well.

A different view of the well:

Take some time to check out this local interest.
