STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
by Karen Speier Vacchiano

My ultimate goal as an educator is to have a part in instilling a lifelong love of learning in every child. I believe it is their birthright to develop their natural curiosity and excitement about life. Yet, so much of the everyday curriculum focuses on the mundane aspects of learning, i.e., memorization, regurgitation of facts, etc. -- rather than on developing creativity and learning how to successfully apply knowledge to solve problems and attain goals throughout the many adventures of life.

I believe that technology provides some tools to help make this happen. Specifically, computers, multimedia software, and the Internet, can provide an environment to stimulate a lifelong love of learning and develop creativity and critical thinking and decision-making skills in every child.

When skillfully applied by a caring teacher, well-trained in integrating technology within their subject areas, these tools are not the end, rather the means to enable students to experience a deeper level of learning and consequently an excited, positive attitude toward learning.

Therefore, my ardent desire is to be instrumental in whatever capacity I can have the most impact on the integration of technology within the K-12 curriculum.
