L.D.S. says Jonathan married 2nd Desire Sanford Cooper but Virkus says he
married 2nd Desire Scoville, a widow (1707-1795) in 1757. It is probable that
Scoville was her married name. Jonathan is referred to as Deacon Jonathan
Garnsey.

Remarks taken from the Sutliffe Genealogy: John Sutliffe - Son of Nathaniel
and Hannah Sutliffe was born in Deerfield, Mass., in 1674. His father was
killed by the Indians in 1676 and his mother married, second, Samuel
Harrington. John probably accompanied his mother, sisters and stepfather to
Branford, Conn., about 1680, as mention is made of them in Branford about that
time.
He was enrolled on the records of the church in Branford, joining in 1708.
From Branford he went to Durham, Conn., among the first settlers of that town,
being appointed a town officer at the first town meeting in 1706, and was also
one of the inhabitants to whom the patent of the town was granted by the
Legislature in 1708 - going still to church in Branford and having his
children baptized there till a church was organized in Durham some years
later.
His brother Nathaniel, who was with him in Branford, went with him to Durha,
being also appointed a town officer at the first meeting. At the same meeting
it was voted "that the pound be between Nathaniel and John Sutliff on the East
side of the street."
On the granting of the patent of the town (1708), John was appointed on a
committee with two others to run the town lines, and the next year "the town
made choice of Serj. John Sutliff to go to Guilford and elsewhere, to gather
what money ye gentlemen that have farms within the town will contribute
towards the building of the Meeting house."
The following is an explanation of this vote: The territory of Durham was
supposed originally to be embraced within the limits of the adjoining towns;
but when their lines came to be surveyed, it was found there was a tract left
not included in them. This still remaining the property of the colony, it
became the custom when a citizen had rendered any distinguished public service
- as that of Capt. John Mason in his campaign against the Pequots - to reward
him by the gift of a farm in the common tract.
These owners, in many instances, did not become residents, and accordingly,
when the town came to be settled, there were no resident citizens representing
their property, and so, when the inhabitants came to build the meeting house,
though non-residents, they were applied to for aid, and being gentlemen of
distinction, it is a token of the high standing of John Sutliff among the
early settlers of the town that he was chosen to represent them in their
application. He was Representative for Durham in 1716. I (B. H. Sutliffe) have
in my possession a power of "Atturney," given by Nathaniel Sutliffe to his
brother, John.
The above shows that the brothers must have had considerable property within
the province of Mass. Bay, part of which may have been some of the land set
off to Matthew Sutcliffe, coming down to them through their father, Nathaniel,
and some may have come to them from their grandfather Plympton.
In 1707 the town of Durham "Voted and granted stream to dam up for use of
sawmill to John Sutlief." At an earlier period, the town granted the Allyn's
brook to Thomas Stanley and John Sutlief for to run a corn mill. In 1723, the
two brothers, John and Nathaniel, settled on Haddam Quarter, having the
permission of the town of Haddam to still attend public worship in durham, and
from there John came to Northburn (now Thomaston, Conn.) He settled on the
west side of the river, below the Spruces, "his house being on the spot where
Jonathan Warner now lives. He came to own all the land west as farm as the
"Hemlocks," and between Cemetery Hill on the north and the Knife Shop village
(Reynolds Bridge) on the south, the tract being known as "Sutliff Swamp." He
also owned the mill privilege at what is now known as the Woolen Mill, having
a grist mill there (1730), the first one in the town of Waterbury, Conn., of
which Northbury was then a part.
On the tax list of Waterbury, Conn., for the year 1730, he was rated as
follows: John Sutliff 2pr; 36L; 2 hors, 2 cow, 2yr;22L; meadow land; 1L16s.
He married, in 1697-8, Hannah Brockett, a daughter of Benjamin of New Haven,
Conn.

492. JOHN HUMISTON JR. was born 24 Oct 1686 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, USA. He died 17 Dec 1767. JOHN married HANNAH RAY on 23 Jun 1711. [Parents]

John moved in 1730 from North Haven to Northfield, Conn., where he was voted
into the second seat of the meetinghouse in 1752.

493. HANNAH RAY was born 1693 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, USA. She died 20 Nov 1786 in North Haven, New Haven, CT, USA.

Her parents may have been Caleb Ray and Hannah George (they were married
circa 1681/82, Caleb born 1654 and Hannah 21 Jan 1660). There are some that
believe Hannah was Hannah Royce, not Ray.

of a press gang and that he swam ashore at Rhode Island.

497. HANNAH CLARK was born 13 Feb 1646 in Woburn, Middlesex, MA, USA. She died May 1704. [Parents]

Hannah was married first to William Frizzel of Concord, Mass. She died after
May 1704. She may have been one of Corwallis's prisoners who were sent here
for sale.

498. DANIEL TUREL JR. was born 1646. He died 1708. DANIEL married ANNA BARRELL on CIR 1671. [Parents]

Daniel was in an artillery company of 1674. Savage says he may have died
Jan 22, 1699 as Forman gives this (wrongly) for his father. Torrey states
Captain Daniel Jr. died in 1699.

499. ANNA BARRELL was born 23 Apr 1651. She died 1712. [Parents]

Anna is also found as "Anne" and her last name is sometimes spelled with one
L. She was "of Boston". Savage calls her Hannah with date of birth 4/23/1651
so has to be our Anna.
