1126. ABRAHAM MARTIN was born 1589 in France. He died 8 Sep 1664 in Quebec, Quebec, Canada. ABRAHAM married MARGUERITE LANGLOIS.

Martin arrived in New France with his wife, Marguerite Langlois, her sister
Francoise and brother-in-law Pierre Desportes (the parents of Helene
Desportes) about 1620. Martin may have been of Scottish descent or he might
have used the sobriquet if he had been enrolled in military service or had
been a member of an illegal organization: such names were used to avoid
detection by officials looking for deserted soldiers or in case the records of
an illegal organization were seized. It is also possible that he acquired the
name because he had made several voyages to Scotland as a young man. There is
some question as to whether Martin was really an official pilot or not,
although he was referred to as "king's pilot" in his own day. However, he did
fish well down into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
It is presumed that the Plains (or Heights) of Abraham are named after
Martin. It is picturesquely said that the "Cote d'Abraham" was the path that
Martin used to descend to the St Charles River to water his animals. His
property amounted to 32 acres in all, 12 received from the Compagnie de la
Nouvelle-France in 1635 and 20 as a gift from Sieur Adrien Du Chesne, ship's
surgeon to Pierre Legardeur de Repentigny in 1645. This land was sold by the
Martin family to the Ursulines in 1667. It is possible that this is the same
Martin who was employed by Jean De Biencourt and Du Gua de Monts as navigator
on the coast of Acadia, although he would have been very young at the time.
When David Kirke captured Quebec in 1629 and left his brother Lewis as
governor until 1632, Martin and his family stayed on. In his later years
Martin fell in the estimation of his fellow citizens when he was accused of
improper conduct with regard to a young girl in Quebec. He was imprisoned for
this on 15 Feb 1649.
As far as can be found from the records, Abraham Martin and Marie Langlois
had nine or ten children. Anne Martin, born in France and married 17 Nov 1635
to Jean Cote, was probably not Abraham's daughter. Eustace, baptized 24 Oct.
1621 and the godson of Eustache Boulle was the first child born in Canada.
Marguerite, born 4 Jan 1624 and married 22 May 1638 to Etienne Racine had many
descendants, including the two bishops Racine. Helene, born 21 June 1627, was
a god-daughter of Samuel de Champlain. She married first Claude Etienne in
1640 and on 3 Sept 1647 Medard Chouart Des Groseilliers. Charles-Amador, born
7 March 1648, the godson of Charles De Saint-Etienne de La Tour, was the
second born Candian-born priest. It is possible that Brother Dominique Scot,
spoken of in the Jesuit Relations as having gone to the Huron country as a
young man, was also a son. It is also possible that a young man who is
mentioned as having been in the Huron country at the same time (1634-35) was
Eustache Martin.
Written by Henry B. M. Best in his piece on Martin.
Abraham Martin is memorable for having been with Louis Hebert one of the
first colonists of Canada and for having bequeathed his name to the celebrated
Plains of Abraham.
The first baptism entered on the register of Notre Dame de Quebec is, in the
month of October 1621, that of Eustace Martin, son of Abraham Martin dit
L'Ecossais, pilot of the St. Lawrence River and of Marguerite Langlois. Father
Denis, Recollet priest performed the ceremony and Eutache Boulay,
brother-in-law of Champlain was the godfather and Guillematte Hebert, wife of
Guillaume Couillard was god mother. Eustache Martin, is thought to be the
first son of France born at Quebec. He is considered to be the first
native-born Canadian, of French origin.
Besides the record of his baptism, we have no further precise information
about Eustache Martin. He is believed to have died quite young.
Charles Amador, the only son of Abraham Martin to out-live the father, was
the second native-born Canadian to be raised to the priesthood. He was a
member of the foreign mission seminary at Quebec City and chancellor of the
cathedral.
Abraham Martin left through his many daughters a very numerous posterity. In
the archives of the Urseline Sisters are the titles of the two farms which
belonged to him. These two plots of land were sold to the heirs of Abraham.
The farm of Abraham Martin received the name of the Plains of Abraham, a
name then extended to the neighbouring plateau on which was fought the famous
battle between Wolfe and Montcalm.
As a pilot of the St. Lawrence River Abraham Martin was the origin of our
national merchant marine. As the first pilot he drew the first maps of the
river.
It is still interesting to note that the little ship which still serves the
pilot at Pointe-auPere near Rimouski bears the name of the first Canadian
pilot 'Abraham Martin'. The other ship on this service carries the name
'Jalobert' which was the name of the first French pilot who came her with
Jacques Cartier.
First farmer and first pilot Abraham Martin by his courage and knowledge
carved himself an imperishable reputation on our history sheet. The Historic
Society of the Province of Quebec erected in June 1963 his monument at Quebec
City.
This above biography is handed out by the Department of Tourism in Quebec
City, Quebec, Canada. Abraham has his own monument in Old Quebec and is also
listed on the Louis Hebert monument as one of the first settlers of Quebec. A
large museum is located on the grounds of the Plains of Abraham and the entire
story of Abraham along with details of the battle fought there are found
there. The musuem and the grounds themselves are lovingly preserved by the
Canadian Historical Society.

and it was his request that he be buried in the village church yard. His will
was proven Oct. 13, 1614, in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. It was
discovered among the papers of Capt. William Sprague of Leicester, MA, who
died in 1832 and was published in the 2nd edition of Hosea Sprague's

and then to Marshfield in 1650. He was deputy of the General Court in 1637-38

1188. WILLIAM LANE was born 1580 in Norfolk, Norfolk, England. He died WP 6 JUL 1654 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA, USA. WILLIAM married AGNES FARNSWORTH before 1612 in England.

William was in Dorchester, MA in 1635. This ancestor of a numerous prosterity
was a person of competent property, a freeman, a virtuous and good citizen who
evidently had the esteem and confidence of the people. His daughter Mary was
the widow of Joseph Long, with whom he lived several years. His will is among
the earliest wills on record in Suffolk County, MA. In it he names his
children and many of his sons in law. A recent discovery places William Lane
in Beaminster, Dorset, England.

1189. AGNES FARNSWORTH was born about 1584 in prob. Norfolk, England. She died 3 Apr 1671 in England.

One of William's wives was Agnes Farnsworth. It is not yet been proven if she
is the mother of his children. It seems unlikely as Torrey states their first
child was born in 1618. William may have married as his second wife, Mary
Killoway-Kelway, but I suspect this marriage was the "Boston" William.
