Quotes & Poems of The Victorian Era

I love short poems and quotes. Therefore, I decided to share some of my favorite ones with you. Some quotes are not exactly from The Victorian period. Nevertheless I think they are worth reading. If you have any Victorian Era quotes or short poems wouldn't you care to share them with me as well? I will place them here and link them back to your home-page/site. This can actually turn out to be fun! Enjoy the reading!

Lady Sylvia Ann

Write on your hearts that everyday is the best day of the year.

R. W. Emerson

The supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved.

Victor Hugo

You'll find when you smile, your day will be brighter,
and all your burdens will seem so much lighter.

Helen Steiner Rice

I consider these some of the best quotes of Ralph W. Emerson:

»The only way to have a friend is to be one.«

»Society acquires new arts, and loses old instincts.«

»Let us treat men and women well; treat them as if they were real. Perhaps they are.«

»What lie behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.«

»The greatest homage to truth is to use it.«

»The end of the human race will be that it will eventually die of civilization.«

»Men are what their mothers made them.«

»Sometimes a scream is better than a thesis.«

And my All time favorite:

»Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.«

Poems by Emily Dickinson - Book II - Love

      I. Consecration.
Proud of my broken heart since thou didst break it,
Proud of the pain I did not feel till thee,
Proud of my night since thou with moons dost slake it,
Not to partake thy passion, my humility.

      II. Love's Humility.
My worthiness is all my doubt,
      His merit all my fear,
      Contrasting which, my qualities
      Do lowlier appear;

      Let I should insufficient prove
      For his beloved need,
      The chiefest apprehension
      Within my loving creed.

      So I, the undivine abode
      Of his elect content,
Conform my soul as 't were a church
      Unto her sacrament.
