Lionheads, believed to have been first bred in Belgium, were originally supposed to be long-haired dwarf rabbits. Amongst thier litters were individuals with medium-length hair and a mane of longer hair around their head. These maned rabbits were more popular than the others, and so after selective breeding the Lionhead was created.
The mane falls between the ears, like a fringe, and grows into a V shape at the nape of the neck. The mane extends over the rabbit's cheeks and chest. Their ears are small and held erect. The ears should be well-furred, but they must lack furnishings. They have a medium bone structure with medium-length feet, so as to show the mane. Faults in showing the Lionhead include too dilute color and long fur on the flanks. Disqualificatons include furnishings on the ears and thin manes. Unfortunately, some adult Lionheads are known to shed their mane, thus making them unshowable.
Nevertheless, Lionheads have very energetic, amiable temperaments. They adore attention and constantly beg for it. They're not very aggresive as well. Although you still must brush the fur (especially the mane) often, Lionheads actually aren't the hardest long-haired rabbit to care for, since their manes do not mat very often. The rest of their body hair is short, too.
