The New Zealand rabbit, originally brought to the USA by sailors from New Zealand, has thick, luxurious fur and a long, stocky body prime for the meat market. They come in white, black, red, and blue. accepted as a variety. The first variety (and the most popular) was red, with white debuting in the 1920s. The black and blue varieties came next, black being more recent. In showing, bucks are not allowed dewlaps, and does are allowed only small dewlaps. Blue and black New Zealands will be disqualified if they have light toenails or white patches in their fur. New Zealands have large, rounded ears, so faults in showing include thin, pointy ears and double dewlaps. There are also faults in having narrow shoulders or slender bodies.
