The Silver, often called the "Sterling Breed," is noted for the silver ticking on its fur (called silvering.) This silver ticking comes from a recessive gene. As the bunny grows from kit to adult, the Silvering gene causes pigments from certain hairs (or the tips of hairs) to be stripped, making them a silvery-white color. The Black coloration allows for the best contrast between normal hairs and white hairs. Chocolate coloration causes a very Chestnut-colored rabbit. The coat of fawn Silvers has a nice balance between silver hairs and gold hairs. Kits are born completely solid. Silver breeders have often commented that watching Kits slowly gain silver hairs is one of the best things about breeding the Silver rabbit. Silvers have very short, flyback fur coats. They are a very rare breed in the USA.
Silvers are very athletic, strong, active rabbits that would probably have the most fun chewing on everything in your house and leaving a trail of destruction (this rabbit is not for children or beginners.) The Silvers are not aggresive breeds, but need lots of space and could even amuse itself for hours with toys.
In judging, the Silvering color is worth 50 out of 100 points. The standards of judging do not have an ideal degree of silvering, but a large abundance of the silvery-white hair helps alot. The Silvering should be even throughout the body. You get disqualified from showing the rabbit, however, if there are white spots on the coat or if the toenails are white.
