| Lets Lara know exactly where she is and how to get out of hot water This is where things really do get a bit sci-fi. The Communicator is one of Ericsson's concept models, which means it's more a visualization of what mobile gadgets might be like in the future rather than a something you'll be able to buy in a couple of months. Ericsson have shown off a concept model in the movies before, providing James Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies with a fictional smartphone which could remotely maneouvre his car. While concept models rarely appear in the shops in the original incarnation, they do showcase the new features and services Ericsson think people will wantfrom their gadgets. Lara uses the Communicator in the Tomb Raider as both a phone which lets her talk to her tech support Bryce via the Bluetooth Headset, and also as a location finder, helping her find her way around locations as diverse as Cambodia and Siberia. This sort of technology already exists but it will be a while yet before itreaches this kind of sophistication, where your phone pinpoints exactly where you are anywhere in the world and gives you a map of your surroundings. |
