The Farmers Inn - Havana, N.D.

The Farmer's Inn has received national coverage with a piece on national T.V. with Tom Brokaw, articles in People Magazine and Midwest Living among others.  What makes this small town cafe so newsworthy you ask?     Here's the story!

The town and surrounding area of Havana was faced with the closing of their only cafe and meeting place in 1984.  The residents banded together, raised and borrowed the money to build their own $39,000 cafe.  It was run as a non profit business with volunteer help until 1999.  Imagine if you will, getting enough people to volunteer to run a cafe open from breakfast through the lunch hour, 6 days a week!  No small feat in my book!  The menu has always featured good home cooking as advertised with a giant mural painted on an old house on the edge of town.  Some of the popular menu items have included Indian tacos, vegetable beef soup and lots of yummy desserts.   The Farmer's Inn remains open at this time, but since mid 1999, it has been run by an individual.  Much of the volunteer help was more than ready to retire (for the 2nd time!) and this has seemed to work out for everyone.  I personally hope that it never closes!
