About...
The Laramie Project
On the night of October 7, 1998 in the town of Laramie, Wyoming, gay college student Matthew Shepard was robbed, beaten, and left to die by two young men in an apparent anti-gay hate crime. Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theatre Project traveled to Laramie from New York to conduct more than two hundred interviews over the next year. Those questioned included friends of the victim, college professors, ministers, and ordinary townspeople.

The Laramie Project is a compilation of these interviews combined with public records (including court transcripts) arranged in a theatrical format that carries an impact far outweighing a documentary. Issues explored include Matthew Shepard himself, religion, homosexuality, and ideologies on both sides of the political spectrum. In the end, the play does not side with one position but rather embraces all viewpoints with its strong message of tolerance over violence.
