Abstract
This retrospective study investigated the effects of year, branch of service and diagnostic related groups (DRGs) on inpatient length of stay (LOS) and treatment full cost for 5,116 cardiac surgical patients in the Department of Defense (DoD) over a 2-year period (1999 - 2000).  Hierarchical regression analyses were used to determine the unique variance for the identified variables associated with LOS and treatment full costs.  trends for LOS associated with DRG yielded statistically significant results with F (2, 5111) = 1052.94, P< .001.  Diagnostic related groups also emerged significant for treatment full costs with F (2, 5111) = 2218.04, P < .001 while holding constant the effects due to all other variables.  Additional analyses revealed significant differences among the branches of services for both cost and LOS, but no apparent effect revealed due to study year while holding constant the effects due to other variables.
