JOSEPH STANDING
Salt Lake City Cemetery, UT
Only a handful of deaths among The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint members have produced the magnitude of sentiment than the murder of Elder Joseph Standing.
Elders Joseph Standing and Rudger Clawson were surrounded by a mob at Varnal Station, Georgia, and were taken to the woods apparently for the purpose of receiving a thrashing, as a majority of missionaries recieved. Elder Standing made some show of resistance when one of the mobbers fired at him. Elder Clawson escaped certain death and managed to excort the body of his mutilated companion.
In August of 1880 an Italian-marble monument was erected over Standing's grave, reaching 15 feet in hight. Carved on the sides were the names of the twelve men who participated in the murder. A galvanized iron box was placed inside the monument containing copies of various news accounts of the murder and trial, along with photograph's of Standing and Clawson, and information regarding the monument. The five foot obelisk on top broke off, the writing since wore away, and for a time the entire monument was gone, and has since been replaced by the Young Men Mutual Improvement Association ( who first donated it ), exact in detail of the original, including an iron fence surrounding the structure to prevent futher desecration.Over 10,000 people attended Elder Standing's funeral
