Best known as Arthur's creator, author/illustrator Marc Brown has been working with this beloved aardvark for over twenty-five years. He is also the author/illustrator of the dinosaur characters that make certain topics such as divorce, death, traveling and talking about sex with young people a little softer for children to deal with. These books are ideal for parents to read to their children and explain situations that are rather difficult for them to understand in the adult world.It brings the situations down to a level they can clearly understand.
Events in the Brown's life often are reflected in books about Arthur as well as ideas from children he meets in schools or other places he visits. In writing about things that happen to him, many children can relate to the character because they may be going through the same thing. The writing is simple yet sends so many messages to the reader, thanks in part to the colorful illustrations that accompany the books.
The books selected have been on the best sellers list or have been selected/won awards. Arthur's Chicken Pox won the 1996 Children's Book Award (Colorado), When Dinosaurs Die: A Guide to Understanding Death received the 1996 Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year and Arthur's Reading Race was awarded as 1999 Golden State Children's Book Award. Several other books have also been nominated for awards as well as being best sellers.
