Indonesian soldier jailed for
his role in bomb attacks
An Indonesian soldier has been
jailed for three and a half years for his role in several bomb
attacks targetting Christians in the Maluku islands.
A military spokesman said Chief Private Hanafi was convicted by a
military tribunal in the city of Ambon on Tuesday.
28-year-old Hanafi was also discharged from the military.
Maluku was the scene of bloody Muslim-Christian battles over the
past three years.
More than 5,000 people were killed and half a million made
homeless.
Hanafi was charged with possessing and planning to use explosives,
an offence punishable by death.
The prosecution said that on November 30 last year he planted five
kilograms of explosives in an attempt to blow up the governor's
office.
The military judges ruled that Hanafi was behind at least nine
bomb attacks in Maluku.
