Six
Arrested Over Kopassus Mall Blast
|
Laksamana.Net -
The military has arrested six people in connection with a
recent explosion at a Jakarta shopping mall owned by the
Army’s elite Special Forces (Kopassus).
A group of Kopassus officers arrested the six on Saturday
(6/7/02) at their hideout in Cileungsi, Bogor, southeast of
Jakarta, and handed them over to police.
Ammunition and at least one grenade were found at the
hideout, reported state news agency Antara.
Police claim last Monday’s blast at the Graha Cijantung
mall in East Jakarta was caused by a large firework, but
Army chief General Ryamizard Ryacudu said the device was a
homemade bomb and incident was linked to regional conflicts.
Jakarta Police spokesman Anton Bachrul Alam said all six
suspects were from Aceh province, where separatists are
fighting for the creation of an independent state.
National Police spokesman Inspector General Saleh Saaf said
officers are now searching for six other suspects believed
to be in Cibinong, Bogor, and in Bintaro, South Jakarta.
At least four people were injured in Monday’s explosion at
the mall owned by a company controlled by Kopassus’ Kobame
Foundation.
Kopassus funds some of its military operations through
various business activities, such as the mall, while some
officers from the force provide security for nightclubs and
brothels.
Sources say a turf war is taking place in Jakarta between
police, the Army and gangsters for control of lucrative
protection rackets at some of the city’s nightspots.
A recent attack by Muslim vigilantes on Jakarta’s main
backpacker street, Jalan Jaksa, has been linked to the
dispute. |
