A sniper has shot and wounded a
soldier in Indonesia's strife-torn Ambon city as Maluku
independence supporters again hoisted banned separatist flags.
The state Antara newsagency reported the soldier was patrolling a
street in the Trikora area in downtown Ambon when a bullet hit him
in the leg.
Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, remained tense as activists
of the separatist South Maluku Republic (RMS) flew two flags
attached to air balloons.
On Thursday explosions and angry demonstrations left six people
injured as separatists marked the 52nd anniversary of the
Republic.
The violence prompted the police to send some 200 reinforcements
to Ambon on Friday.
Police have arrested 27 Ambonese for setting banned South Maluku
Republic flags aloft.
