Snipers open fire on passenger speedboats in Ambon

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): A group of unidentified gunmen sprayed bullets on Tuesday morning at two passenger speedboats crossing Teluk Dalam bay in Ambon, capital of restive Maluku, but no casualties were reported.

The gun shots came from the direction of Kapahaha, while the two speedboats were approaching from the opposite direction, Antara reported.

The Tobastar speedboat traveling from Galala in Sirimau district to Benteng in Nusaniwe district and Amilos vessel heading to Rumah Tiga were crossing the bay when snipers opened fire.

Two Navy units, who happened to be on guard in the bay reacted quickly to the incident and escorted the two speedboats back to port.

Ambon residents have been forced to rely on water transport because many land routes have been blockaded and segregated following three years of bloody communal, religious conflict in the province. (edt)
