2007 Titans

  4/03/07 - Atlantic
What a difference a year makes.  Last year we beat Atlantic 11-0 as they were a first year team.  They have come a long way in one year and this year hold us to a Hawkeye 10 Conference opener 2-1 win.  The winds are out of the West blowing at over 30 mph, and the temperature is in the low 30's.  Everyone is froze before the game even starts.  Our defense breaks down, and Riley Landolt finds himself one on one, they score right off the top just 1 minute and 5 seconds into the game.  We go down 0-1 and one begins to wonder, are we still looking back to last weeks last second loss to Mt Michael.  We just aren't looking like a team yet, we are not jelling in any position,  especially in the midfield.  Finally 15 minutes into the game Riley comes up to take a free kick from about 45 yards out.  It fades right, goes off of an Atlantic player to Nate Jones.  He plays the ball back in and Kyle Larkin is there to put it away.  We tie it up and feel a little better, we score out first Varsity goal for the season.  Then 10 minutes later Atlantic is called for a hand ball in the box and Kyle Larkin steps in to take the Penalty Kick.  He beats the keeper to the right side and we go up 2-1.  The half ends and that is all we are able to put away having the wind at our back.  It is now time to defend the lead and yet continue to pressure as we must play into the wind the second half.  We have some kids playing out of position right now.  Nate Draeger, Nate Jones, and Brett Epperson stepped up and played very well tonight.  We will practice the rest of the week as we prepare now for Hawkeye 10 rival Glenwood coming to our house on Monday for our home opener.  We must play better against  Glenwood.  My thought and belief is we played to our competition level tonight.  I hope this is true.  Thank you to all of you that came out and weathered the cold to cheer us on and show your support.  It means a lot to the team.

JV had another fun game to watch at least the first half anyway as we scored 5 again and won this time 5-0.  All 5 goals were scored with the wind in the first half.  Scoring tonight was Justin Carlson with 3, Cully Canada and Chris Wenck each with one.  JV has scored 10 on the season and Justin has 5 of them.  Assists tonight go to Tyler Butler, Jaymison Coffelt, and Chris Wenck.  JV looked better tonight as they continue to develop.  The Brugenhemke brothers teamed up tonight for the shutout and the save.  Hunter never touched the ball the first half, and Zane got the save for the second half.  Had a close call in the last minute as Zane came out to meet the player coming in and forced the ball to go wide.  We need to continue to work on our communication and support skills.  We got good playing time for everyone again tonight.
