   4/18/05 - Glenwood
Glenwood come to our house tonight and so did the winds and the weather.  Bad weather is fast approaching and the winds are up and over 30 miles an hour.  Very tough conditions to play any kind of game.  It is our house and our own turf to defend .  We get the wind to our advantage and the idea is to use it.  We play well, we move the ball around, but we don't shoot.  We need to take advantage of all opportunities, but tonight we let another one slip by.  Yes we had some opportunities again, but we don't put them away.  The half comes and it is 0-0 and we have to wait out a shower and lightening as it moves over.  At the half I asked someone, anyone, please step up.  Take charge and get this team moving forward.  They (Glenwood) will come out strong and will be shooting from everywhere, we need to attack and we need to be ready.  We came out much better in the second half did we did in Sioux City last week.  We were controlling the game and the tempo of the game.  Then 5 minutes 30 seconds in the half they mount one drive they move down the field and hit it from about 20 yards out, it hits the cross bar and bounces straight down and in.  We come back the other way but we get in so far and lose it due to too many touches or bad 1st touch.   Finally with just over 18 minutes left in the game Josh Grosvenor sets up a corner kick and finds Pablo Navarrete on the back side all alone.  Pablo finishes it off with a nice header to tie up the game.  It is a good defensive battle now at this point and one begins to wonder about the final.  Then with 8 minutes left. they take the ball, beat 4 people at and around the 18 and manage to be one on one with Riley.  We are down now 2-1 and that is how it ends up.  Overall our effort was good, I am pleased with that.  Defensively, we were strong again as Seth Jackson, Joel Edwards, Corey Lane, and Dan Gulden all played well back there, we played well enough to win.  We actually played pretty well when we had the wind at our back, we just didn't use it and shoot.  We have a very tough schedule at the beginning of the season every year and it doesn't get any easier.  We have played very well against some great teams so far, just been on the losing side.  When we break out I hope you are there to see it.  Mt. Michael is now 8-0, Sioux City North has only lost one game, and Glenwood is now 5-0 and #1 in state.  We need to believe in ourselves, and it will come.  Friday the battle continues as we travel to Falcon hill to play St. Alberts.  This is never an easy game, and there is no reason why Friday's game won't be another battle.

JV on the other hand took advantage of the wind in the first half of their game and once again played a very solid and good game.  The best thing about tonight's win is they did it with very little help from Varsity players.  James Duysen was moved up to varsity tonight and got to play in both halves, congratulations James.  We controlled the play of the game very well in the first half with the wind at our back as we attacked the goal several times.  Just 5 minutes into the game James Duysen puts in the first goal and we are off and running.  We maintain the play pretty well the whole time on their side of the field as we are patient and look around for the opportunity.  6 minutes left in the half and Kyle Zaloudek is in front of the net and hammers it home.  Then just two minutes later Kyle Herren puts away the third goal and the half ends 3-0.  Now the second half we need to protect against the kick and run.  Ryan Thomas starts in goal for us tonight and played a good shut out.  Zane Brugenhemke went in the second half and was doing a good with the save then we get called for a foul in the box and they are awarded a penalty kick.  They score and that is how it ends, 3-1.  JV is playing very well and they are fun to watch.  We logged assists on goals tonight by Zach Duysen and Tommy VonMende, great work and way to look around.  JV will also have their hands full with St. Alberts on Friday.  Check back on Friday night and see how we do.
