Coach's Comments
2007 Titans

  5/03/07 - Denison
What a difference two days and one game makes.  Even though we played our hearts out on Tuesday, we found something tonight, we clicked, and turned it into another conference win.  We are one win away from the first conference boy's soccer championship for the Hawkeye 10.  We had an all out team effort tonight and managed to score 4 goals before the half, and 5 in total by the end of the game.  It was fun to watch and you could see that they were working together tonight.  We were talking and with the talking, came the passes.  We weathered the storm from Denison the first 15 minutes of the game as they attacked several times and almost scored twice in the first 3 minutes of the game.  The first goal came off a free kick by our keeper Riley Landolt.  Riley came up to take the kick, hit it on the ground, possibly deflected once and rolls into the goal 18 minutes into the game.  Goal 2 came 4 minutes later off a nice 1 / 2 combination and a push through by Nate Jones to Tommy Vonmende who puts it away, 2-0.  Goal 3 came at the 35 minute mark of a Brandon Duffy throw in.  Tommy was in the right spot again and scores his 2nd goal of the game and the season, 3-0.  3 minutes later Logan Stichler sets up a corner kick, sends the ball in and Brett Epperson scores his first goal of the season with a great header, 4-0 and half time.  At this point we are up 4-0 and have out shot them 13-12.  The fifth and final goal comes just 25 seconds into the second half as Cory Jasek is right there as the defender misplays the ball, he manages to go around the defender and goes in on the keeper, 1 on 1, 5-0.  From there we move the ball around at will and manage to be able to start subbing.  We get everyone into the game as the subs manages to get some good playing time.  Riley Landolt logs his second shut out of the season and Zane Brugenhemke logs his second shout out save.  Logan Stichler, Tommy VonMende, and Kyle Herrin controlled the middle tonight while Chris Navarrete, Brandon Duffy, and Evan Summy played a great defensive game.   Part of the difference tonight was the what the forwards did to create space with movement.  We found some things out tonight about us and what the team has to offer.  The subs off the bench really stepped up tonight and played with some heart as dthey came in and did their part to preserve the shut out.  GREAT TEAM effort.  Join us on Monday as we travel to Harlan for the last conference game of the year.  The conference championship is truly on the line on Monday.  See you in Harlan.

JV, what can I say.  In case anyone is wondering, tonight is the first time since 1998 that the JV has beat Dension 3-0.  We have tied them twice since then, but we have not beat them.  It was a great team effort once again by everyone.  We scored 19 minutes into the first half when Roberto Gaytan sets up the corner shot.  He sends it in and after coming off the keeper, Curtis Dreager is standing in the right spot.  The ball is just laying there, he hits it in and scores his first goal of the season.  From there it truly becomes a defensive battle as they attack us several times but Scott Nelson, Gabor Fieszel, Darian Scott, and Curtis Dreager turn away everything they throw at us.  Zane and Hunter Brugenhemke team up to log the second shut out and the save of the season.  Everyone here gets into the game as well and managed to help set the pace for the Varsity game that followed.
