2004 Titans

   5/6/04 - Denison

We traveled to Denison tonight just looking and hoping to survive, win one, and come out of the game without losing another player.  The Varsity roster was trimmed by four starters tonight with Zach Paulson, Josh Grovesnor, Riley Landolt, and Luke Thompson all on the bench.  We told the boys at the beginning of the game that if they attacked, they brought the game to them, and talked, we can go home a winner.  We started the game just that way.  We were passing, winning 50/50's, talking, and control the play of the game.  Thirteen minutes into the game we score the first goal of a nice give and go combinations that started in the middle of the field.  We stopped an attempt on goal by them and brought the ball back up field.  It started in the middle with Josh Probst playing the ball out to Joel Edwards.  Joel and Ben Edwards do a couple of give and go's to walk the ball down the field and the last touch is back into Joel Edwards and he lays a perfect through ball to the middle to Pablo Navarette.  Pablo beats the defender and puts it home.  That's what were talking about.   Then we start to have a couple of breakdowns in the middle leaving our defenders in several 5 on 3 situations.  The next thing we know, they score their first at the twenty six minute mark.  Then in the next six minutes they score two more to take a 3-1 lead into the half.  We told them at the half we are in this game.  We are controlling the play and winning the 50/50 ball.  Get back to what we did at the beginning of the game and we can still come out on top.  They score one early in the second half and the game ends 4-1, Denison.  There is a reason they have won 12 games this year, they have a lot of speed on the top and they know how to use it.  We need to keep our heads up and continue to stay positive right now.  Dan Gulden and Josh Probst played well tonight in the middle.  At times we would get caught with a big gap in the middle of the field but they usually figured it out and got back to closing it up.  Joel Edwards stepped and played well filling for the injured Josh Grovesnor.  Ben Edwards played through pain and played the whole game with a broken toe.  We also can't leave the comments without Thanking two keepers for steeping up tonight to cover while we wait for Riley Landolt to return.  Brad Stageman and Stephen Burke covered the goal and played well.  Hey they only had 2 days of crash course keeper training.  Thank you gentlemen.  We will take Friday off from practice to get some people healed up.  We will practice on Saturday though because Harlan comes to town for the final home game of the season.  It will be Senior night as well.  Harlan has played us tough every year and I expect nothing different from them on Monday.

Tonight the JV grew up a little as well.  They pick up another tie but they played well enough to win.  We looked good tonight with the play to the corners, winning 50/50's and we really started out the game talking very well.  They score first and we go down early.  However we were moving the ball so well to the corners it was hard to believe it wasn't already 2 or 3 to nothing by then.  We would always be just a little short or so we say, unlucky.  We never stopped or hung our heads though.  We continued to fight and push the ball to the corner.  We get a corner kick with one minute left in the first half.  Turner Morgan sends the ball in and they punch it out.  We get another chance at the corner with 20 seconds on the clock.  Turner sets it, pushs in the perfect ball, the keeper goes up, it goes through his hands and bounces off the back post into the net.  Turner scores again.  Turner played his heart out tonight and left it all on the field.  The game is tied 1-1 at the half and it is all defense on both sides of the ball the second half.  The defense played well again tonight and they are becoming a strong team back there.  Good job, Cory Jasek, Chris Navarette, James Duysen, and Walter Osborn.  Over all hats off to everyone tonight.  Next time.
