The ingredients you will need to make this solution are available at your local pharmacy.  If not in stock, your pharmacist can order it for you.  It does not require a prescription.  Please note that Gentian Violet is a stain, so wearking gloves and handling carefully is suggested.  This solution when used as needed to clean ears has proven to prevent ear infections common in the PBGV.  It should also be used in conjunction to tratment for an infection with hair removal from the ear canal and an antibiotic if needed.  Antibiotics commonly used by vets for yeast infections acute...include Otomax or Panalog for chronic...constant recurrent ear infection should prompt followup with vet to check for other underlying causes sometimes associated with recurrent infections such as hypothyroidism noted in teh PBGV or food allergies also noted but infrequent.

16 OZ. ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL

4 TBSP. BORIC ACID POWDER

16 DROPS GENTIAN VIOLET 1% SOLUTION (CAUTION: WILL STAIN)

SHAKE BEFORE USING…PLACE IN SALON TYPE BOTTLE COMMONLY USED FOR PERMANENTS OR DYE…

Periodic examination of ear for redness, wax buildup and sweet odor (indicative of yeast infection) is beneficial for your dog.  Other signs indicative of possible infection are persistent scratching of the ears or shaking of the head.  Any questions should be directed to your vet.  An alternative solution available at your vet that is also proven to be effective in lowering incidence of infection is the Chlorohexaphine Ear Wash.  (It is also a blue solution.)
