The following words & thoughts were delivered by Ms Barbara Babin, principal of Chackbay Elementary:

As in so many other places, Loretta's passing has left a void at Chackbay Elementary School. Each of us, like all of you, were shocked at hearing the news. Then, upon reflection of all that she has contributed to the educational system, we saw the symbolism in it being the first clay of school.

Not only has Loretta touched the lives of countless students, but she has done the same for many others, including her fellow teachers. There was always an excitement about her in her quest to educate. Though officially "retired," her calendar was fuller than most. She lovingly did countless things for her dad, her husband, her daughters, and her grandchildren and still found time for us. She was many things to us - our Carnival MC, our Cat in the Hat, our substitute grandparent for students, a substitute teacher, a volunteer, a promoter of the French and cultural programs. But most of all, she was our friend. It has been said that good friends are like watches. They have open faces and busy hands. They're dependable, full of good works and always have time for you. This is Loretta.

On Wednesday, the quote for the day was so fitting. It read, "There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up. As we remember her, we can bestow no better honor to her than to emulate her zeal and love of education.

Also fitting to Loretta's character is that today is Friday, the 13th. We wonder what she might have actually pulled today. She did manage to stop the Daily Comet's presses on Wednesday. As one of my former professors use to say, "Time will tell!"

Good-bye dear friend, may your spirit always keep us on our toes and prod us to follow your example. We will thank God always for you. According to a French proverb, "Gratitude IS the heart's memory. We will remember you always!
